How to Choose Safe Toys for Your Baby: A Parent's Checklist

Walking through a toy store can feel overwhelming. There are thousands of options, all promising to delight and develop your baby. But beyond the bright colors and fun sounds, safety is the number one priority.

Age-Appropriate Is Safety-Appropriate

Every toy box says something like "For ages 0+" or "Not suitable for children under 3." These are based on developmental and safety testing. A toy designed for a 3-year-old often has small parts that pose a choking risk for infants. Always check the age recommendation first.

The Choke Test

Any toy or toy part that fits inside a toilet paper roll is a potential choking hazard for children under 3. This is the "choke tube" standard used by safety experts. When in doubt, hold the toy piece up to a cardboard tube — if it fits inside, keep it away from babies and toddlers.

Safety Certifications to Look For

  • ASTM F963: The primary US standard for toy safety, covering mechanical, physical, flammability, and chemical requirements
  • EN71: European safety standard
  • CPSC compliance: US Consumer Product Safety Commission requirements
  • CE marking: Required for toys sold in the EU

All toys in our toy collection meet these international safety standards.

Material Safety

  • Avoid: Toys with BPA, phthalates, or lead paint
  • Look for: Food-grade silicone, natural wood with non-toxic finishes, organic cotton stuffed animals
  • Check: Paints and dyes should be non-toxic and colorfast

Physical Safety Checks

  • Sharp edges or points
  • Strings or cords longer than 12 inches (strangulation risk)
  • Magnets (powerful magnets are extremely dangerous if swallowed)
  • Button batteries (can cause internal burns if swallowed)
  • Loose parts that could detach

Our Recommended Checklist

  1. Check the age recommendation
  2. Look for ASTM F963 or EN71 certification
  3. Verify no small parts that pass the choke test
  4. Confirm non-toxic materials
  5. Check for no sharp edges, long cords, or magnets
  6. Read recent reviews for any safety concerns

Every product in our toy collection has been carefully selected with these standards in mind.
