How to Dress Your Baby for Every Season

Dressing a baby seems simple until you realize they cannot tell you if they are too hot or too cold, and they regulate temperature very differently from adults.

The Golden Rule: One Layer More Than You

Dress your baby in one more layer than you are wearing. If you are comfortable in a t-shirt, your baby needs a t-shirt plus a light layer. The best way to check: feel the back of their neck or torso. It should feel warm, not hot or sweaty.

Spring Dressing (50-70F)

Summer Dressing (Above 75F)

  • A single layer of lightweight cotton is usually enough
  • Loose-fitting rompers or onesies allow air circulation
  • A wide-brimmed hat for outdoor sun protection
  • Avoid dark colors that absorb heat

Fall Dressing (50-65F)

  • Onesie plus pants or a footed sleeper
  • A light jacket for outdoor outings
  • Soft booties or socks when outside

Winter Dressing (Below 40F)

  • Base layer: Warm onesie or long-sleeved bodysuit
  • Middle layer: Fleece or wool sweater/pants
  • Outer layer: Bunting suit or snowsuit for outdoors
  • Accessories: Hat covering ears, mittens, warm socks

Car seat safety: buckle your baby in regular clothing, then place blankets over the harness. Thick winter coats compress in a crash, creating dangerous slack in straps.

Dressing for Sleep

  • Use a sleep sack rather than loose blankets
  • TOG ratings: 0.5 for summer, 1.0 for spring/fall, 2.5 for winter
  • No hats during sleep
